DISNEY ANIMATION CAREERS
Join us as we explore the creation and development of Gale the Wind Spirit from Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen 2. In this Talk, we go over design, rigging, animation, and the effects workflow. We address the problems and solutions developed for the film.
This is an on-demand session.
This talk will present the history and motivations behind Walt Disney Animation Studios' experimental Short Circuit program, highlight a selection of technical and visual storytelling achievements, and discuss how resulting lessons have impacted filmmaking at the studio.
During "Show Yourself" in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen 2, materials and lights are the main representation for three key story elements: glacial ice, the magic of the Spirits, and the concept of memory. This Talk covers the creative approaches and collaborative workflows that brought these elements to the screen.
The first VR short inspired by a Disney Animation feature film, Myth: A Frozen Tale challenged effects artists to create a highly stylized world and the elemental spirits living within it.
Myth: A Frozen Tale is a VR short film created at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Inspired by the folklore of Frozen, the film is a fairy tale about Frozen 2 elemental spirits, told as a visual poem which combines Disney Animation's heritage of 2D animation, music, and real-time technology.
For Frozen 2, one of the key plot points is the destruction of a large dam. A new effects-driven workflow was introduced with effects choreographed at the layout stage then rigid body effects finaled before animation to enable the animators to have the character react to the destruction.
In Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen 2, the Nokk appears as a horse made of water. This Talk describes the collaborative process of designing, animating, and achieving the look and dynamic motion of a character made of water.
The Enchanted Forest in Walt Disney Animation Studios' Frozen 2 includes vegetation manipulated by other characters and forest fires. The scale of vegetation made using the previous toolset difficult, so the effects department developed two workflows to achieve high-quality artistic performance, involving procedural tree animation and fire tree simulations.
In Disney’s Frozen 2, Elsa and Anna appeared in many exquisite costumes with intricate embroidery patterns of different shapes and symbols. We have developed a new curve-based workflow for artists to procedurally create realistic looking embroidery with ease, efficiency, and flexibility.

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? What truths about the past await her as she ventures beyond Arendelle? In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen 2, she travels through the enchanted forests and meets elemental spirits on her dangerous but remarkable journey.
In this session, our filmmakers show how they balanced stylization with naturalism to create a lush autumn forest and designed all-new costumes for beloved characters. Collaboration between multiple departments was the key element to realizing a dark sea guarded by a mythical water horse. On top of that, there were the challenges of navigating a river populated with giants and exploring the interior of a glacier for answers.
