Meander in Moana

Collaboration between 2D Animation Department and Production Technology

July 2019

Honored with an Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences’ SciTech Award in 2017, Meander was first used by artists for the Walt Disney Animation Studios Oscar®-winning short Paperman. Meander is an animation toolset that allows our artists to draw with on-the-fly vectorization. The recorded stroke vectors remain true to artistic intent, and there is negligible software latency while drawing. The vector-based approach allows the application to perform automatic inbetweening between frames. Meander also has simple on-the-fly controls for editing vectors after they’ve been drawn, and the sketching environment features intelligent caching for fast drawing and playback. Since its first use in Paperman, Meander has since been used to help create many other shorts and feature films at the studio.
